Overall Responsibility

Working at The Pink Flamingo Spiegeland, Brisbane, the Technical Manager is responsible for managing the technical department during operational and non-operational hours. Working within a small team, they ensure the highest standards of technical theatre are obtained and maintained. 

The Technical Manager is responsible for all aspects of the technical department, including smooth and safe operation of shows, recruitment and training of team members, maintenance of the equipment and its effective implementation across the site. 

 

Specific Responsibilities

  • This is a hands-on operator role, responsible for all technical requirements of the Front of House, Spiegel Pavilion and Backstage areas, ensuring a safe operation for staff and guests at all times.
  • Manage the day-to-day technical operation of The Pink Flamingo Spiegeland, ensuring the performance space is safe and fit for purpose at all times.
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of The Pink Flamingo Spiegeland site (interior and exterior) and all its capabilities from a technical perspective, including lighting, sound and video to effectively operate and troubleshoot potential issues.
  • Direct line management of technical supervisors and casual team members.
  • Ensure that appropriate safety checks, record keeping and reporting are undertaken for all technical equipment used within the Spiegel Pavilion and across the wider site.
  • Develop and manage a proactive maintenance schedule for technical equipment in the performance spaces, and carry out maintenance tasks as required.
  • Advise on the repair and renewal of stage infrastructure and fixed communications equipment in the performance spaces and maintain a knowledge of current best practices and relevant technologies.
  • Work closely with the Production creatives to ensure the highest production standards for Pink Flamingo in-house productions and events.
  • Oversee and work closely with visiting companies, performers and creatives to facilitate the technical requirements of productions and events at The Pink Flamingo Spiegeland.
  • Liaise with Venue Manager and Production Manager to ensure successful execution of events and overcome & manage conflicting priorities in the best interests of the organisation.
  • Help ensure that the highest standards of professional behaviour and good housekeeping are maintained in performance spaces at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with OHS legislation, policies, procedures and work practices and participate in risk assessments as required. 
  • Maintain the highest levels of health and safety standards in relation to facilities, activities and working practices at The Pink Flamingo, acting as a role model for staff and visiting companies and artists.
  • Operate live performances as a single operator, including the use of QLab, lighting console, sound mixer and electric winch. 
  • Timely reporting of departmental issues, including staffing, maintenance, equipment failure etc.
  • Troubleshoot issues with digital screens (inside and out), lighting equipment, sound equipment, and aerial equipment.
  • Other duties as directed by the Production Manager or Venue Manager. 

 

Skills, Competencies, & Traits 

  • Tertiary qualification in Technical Theatre or similar Experienced QLab programmer / Operator
  • Experienced / Licensed Rigger (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience working on single operator shows
  • Have a hands-on approach to problem-solving
  • Remain focused, motivated and calm under pressure Experience maintaining a variety of technical equipment Exceptional written communication skills
