Are you passionate about theatre? Are you fascinated by how a theatre operates? We are searching for a design professional with a broad understanding of theatre design, like a stage lighting designer, technical director, or architect to train as a Project Theatre Planner.

We are an international, multi-disciplinary team focused on theatre and venue design. We specialise in designing the essential components of a theatre, including theatre planning, seating and sightlines, stage machinery, AV, and lighting.

Schuler Shook is an equal opportunity employer. Together, we strive to create and maintain working and learning environments that are inclusive, equitable, and welcoming.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Personalised training based on your background and skills
  • A supportive, flexible work environment – typically three days in the office, two work from home
  • A culture that values outcomes over rigid procedure
  • A collaborative team that is diverse in both professional and personal backgrounds
  • Competitive salary and bonuses

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

To be successful you need to have:

  • A love for the performing arts
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience as a design professional like a stage lighting designer, technical manager, or architect
  • A curious mind with interests in architecture, engineering, art, and science
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or similar drafting software
  • Strong project management and organisational skills
  • An outgoing personality with good people skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and writing skills
  • Ability to meet with clients, listen well, and create solutions as part of a team
  • Ability to multitask and be a self-starter

While this is not a leadership role, the position has potential for growth and leadership in our practice and in the industry.

We are conducting a national search for someone to work in our Melbourne office. If needed, a moving allowance will be provided.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Your training will be ongoing, and your responsibilities will grow over time, but your initial tasks will include:

  • Utilising your experience to help us develop theatre planning drawings, reports, and specifications
  • Designing and drafting theatre plans and equipment systems
  • Meeting with architects and theatre users to discuss project designs and details
  • Collaborating with other Schuler Shook consultants and design colleagues (architects, acousticians, etc.)
  • Project managing selected projects
  • Reviewing manufacturer’s shop drawings and other submittals
  • Participating in site testing and commissioning

INTERESTED?

This is a unique and critical role in the building and performing arts industry and understanding it fully will require a deeper conversation. If you are interested in the position, please email your CV and cover letter to melbourneadmin@schulershook.com.

In your cover letter please answer these questions:

  • How would you describe your design philosophy in one sentence?
  • Describe your favourite performing arts experience?
  • In your opinion, what is the best example of good architecture in Australia? Why?

All applications will be treated with the strictest confidence.
